What string art actually is
One thread, a ring of nails, and a few thousand crossings. If you have never made one, read this first — it takes two minutes and everything else makes sense afterwards.
Here is the whole thing, and then the details.
You hammer a ring of nails into a board. You tie one thread to one nail. Then you take that thread across the board to another nail, loop it once around, take it across to another nail, loop it once around, and repeat a few thousand times. When you stop, there is a picture.
That is it. There is no weaving, no knotting, no pattern to memorise. The only hard part is not losing your place.
The threads do not connect to each other
This is the question everyone asks first, so: no. There is one strand of thread. It is not cut, not tied to other threads, not woven through anything. It just goes round a nail, across the board, round a nail, across the board.
Where it crosses other parts of itself, it simply lies on top. Nothing is fastened. The only knots in the whole piece are the one at the start and the one at the end — and one more in the middle if the thread breaks.
So where does the picture come from?
From how many threads happen to pass over each spot.
A single thread across a white board is nearly invisible — a fine grey hair. Lay ten across the same patch and it reads as grey. Lay two hundred and it reads as black. The solver’s entire job is deciding which nails to visit so that the busy places land where your photo is dark and the empty places land where it is light.
No individual line means anything. You cannot look at line 1,400 and say which part of the face it draws. It is closer to shading with a very hard pencil than to drawing an outline.
This is also why it only works at a distance. Up close it is an obvious mess of thread. From two or three metres your eye stops resolving individual strands and averages them into tone, and the picture appears. At four metres the threads vanish entirely.
What the numbers mean
The tool gives you a list like 1, 118, 41, 175, 63…. Read it as instructions:
- Tie on at nail 1.
- Take the thread to nail 118. Loop once around it.
- Take it to nail 41. Loop once around it.
- Keep going.
Nail 1 is at the top of the board and the numbers run clockwise, which is also how they are printed on the template. Every tenth nail is marked in bold so you can check you are still in the right place without counting from the start.
The player in the studio reads these out loud, one at a time, at whatever pace suits your hands. That is genuinely the point of it: you cannot look at a screen and wrap thread at the same time.

The winding is the long part, and it is the pleasant part — a podcast-and-a-cup-of-tea job rather than a concentration job, once the player is keeping count for you.
Costs are small: a piece of board, a box of panel pins and a spool of sewing thread. The expensive input is your afternoon.
The one thing that makes or breaks it
The photo. Thread can only put more darkness in some places than others — it throws away colour, sharpness and every small bright detail before it starts.
The quick test: shrink the photo on your phone until it is the size of a stamp. If you can still tell what it is, it will work. If it turns to grey mush, no number of threads will rescue it. Choosing a photo has the rest.
